Remembering the Heroes of 26/11 on the 12th Anniversary of the Attack
26th November 2008 will always be remembered as one of the darkest days in the history of India. On this day, at least 10 terrorist made their way to the city of Mumbai and wreaked havoc is some of the most iconic places in Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, the Taj Mahal Hotel, Leopold Café and the Nariman House Jewish community centre. The city was under siege for about 60 hours and, the massacre lead to the deaths of 166 people, leaving many more injured.
As the financial capital of India was going through one of its toughest times, some heroes rose up and put everything on the line to protect the city and its people. Today, we remember and celebrate these heroes.
Hemant Karkare, Ashok Kamte and Vijay Salaskar
The three brave heroes dealt with terrorists near Cama Hospital. The injured the terrorist, Ajmal Kasab who was caught alive. The three officers lost their lives during this face-off.
An ex-Army soldier, Tukaram took dozens of bullets to his bodies at point blank range. For his sacrifice, he was awarded Ashoka Chakra.
Karambir Singh Kang
Karambir Singh Kang served as the general manager of the Taj Mahal hotel at the time of the attack. He help hundreds of staff members and guests escape. While he survived, his wife and two children were killed in fire on the sixth floor.
Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan
Major Sandeep lost succumbed to his injuries while battling terrorists inside the Taj Mahal hotel. He managed to force terrorists down to the restaurants, where they were taken down by security forces. Their sacrifice shall never be forgotten.
